Critical Reflection

Module
Other than what I have shared in class, I was also able to learn more about presentation skills through this module. One of the polytechnic modules did teach us basic presentation skills such as engaging in eye contact with the audience, but they did not teach us skills such as the effective use of space during presentations. Thus, I was always quite stiff during my presentation. In my formal letter, I have also mentioned that one of my weaknesses is that I have stage fright. I tend to be softer during presentations and there were occurrences where I had to repeat my points multiple times.

Although my presentation was not as good as other classmates, I can say that the presentation I did that day was by far the best presentation that I have done. However, there is definitely room for improvement and it can be better. One of the things that I can improve on would be the effective use of space. During the presentation, I was quite stiff as I was standing still in one part of the room. This could have caused the audience to not feel at ease.

The presentation might not have gone that well without the help of my groupmates and the mock presentation that we did a week prior to the actual oral presentation. My groupmates have helped me edit my script to make it sound more professional. In addition, the feedback that I have received after the mock presentation has helped me improve on my weaknesses. During the mock presentation, I was not confident. Thus, I was very soft and could not convey my message clearly. With the help from my groupmates and feedback that I have received from the mock presentation, I was able to brush up on my presentation skills and be more confident during the actual presentation.

Through this module, I was also able to learn more about the APA 7th edition citation style. I was not used to APA 7th edition style at first, because I used the Harvard citation style back in polytechnic. Thus, it took me some time to do and get used to the APA 7th edition citation style. One example would be citing an image in the report using the APA 7th edition style.

Project
This project has reminded me that different people have different standards. In a team, we have to learn how to compromise with one another. Our team had some disagreements while doing the presentation slides, as everyone wants to show their best. Thus, we spent a lot of time discussing how we should present certain parts of our idea to the stakeholders. It took us quite a long time to reach a consensus. However, this shows that our team wants to show our very best to the audience.

Disagreements are inevitable in a group project, as everyone has different standards and different ways of doing their things. What is important is that everyone has to be willing to discuss and compromise with one another to reach a consensus. When you discuss, it allows others to understand your point of view and vice versa. From there, you can then work with your team to get to the best solution.

In conclusion, I am thankful for the constructive and detailed feedback that I have received from Professor Brad after each submission. With his feedback, I was able to learn more and improve myself. The instructional units were also very clear and have helped me in my submissions. The skills that I have learned from this module would definitely help me in the future, be it in school or in my future workplace.

  1. Dear Yumeme,

Thanks very much for this detailed critical reflection. I appreciate how you’ve addressed both facets of the assignment – module learning and the project -- and that you considered in depth various aspects of the work you did and presented multiple takeaways.

You’ve also written with fine fluency.

Best wishes as you continue your learning journey!

    Brad
